In a battle between two US Open champions, Andreescu was the better as the Canadian beat Raducanu 6-3 3-6 6-2 to progress into the Miami second round.

“You never know what to expect — I just came in here wanting to play my best with what I had today, and I think I did that. Emma played amazing — she’s an incredible player and I have a lot of respect for her. I didn’t let my negative emotions get the best of me.

I stayed positive, I was very energetic and I never gave up,” Andreescu said, per the WTA website.

How Andreescu defeated Raducanu?

Andreescu got off to the best possible start to the match, breaking Raducanu early for a 3-0 lead.

Up by an early break, Andreescu had a chance to go up by a double break in the sixth game but she missed on a break point chance. In the eighth game – when Raducanu was serving to stay in the first set – Andreescu didn’t convert her first set point.

But in the ninth game – when Andreescu was serving for the first set – the Canadian managed to wrap up the opener. After losing the first set, Raducanu missed out on her first break point of the match in the second game of the second set.

No breaks were seen in the second set until the eighth game, in which Raducanu missed out on six break points before converting her seventh to open a 5-3 lead. After winning a very long eighth game, Raducanu served out for the second set in the ninth game.

In the first game of the third set, Andreescu saved three consecutive break points but the Canadian also missed out on three break points in the fourth game. After the first four games of the third set, Andreescu and Raducanu were tied to two games apiece.

Then, Andreescu claimed back-to-back breaks and won four games in a row to complete a three-set win over Raducanu. Andreescu plays Maria Sakkari next.
