Golf betting tips: WGC Match Play, Corales Puntacana Championship and Jonsson Workwear Open picks

Must read

The cream of the golf world is in Austin, Texas where world No 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler is the 17/2 favourite to retain his WGC Match Play title.

Texan Scheffler, a consummate winner of The Players Championship at Sawgrass on his last start, will have his backers given the form he is in, though Jon Rahm (11/1) and Rory McIlroy (14/1) also feature in a list of genuine contenders in this unique event.

The PGA Tour, despite being stripped of many of its top names, also hosts in the Dominican Republic where Wyndham Clark is the 10/1 favourite for the Corales Puntacana Championship after a top-five finish at the Valspar on Sunday.

The African swing of the DP World Tour ends in Steyn City, north of Johannesburg, where Jordan Smith and Adri Arnaus are 18/1 pokes for the Jonsson Workwear Open.

Hovland can scramble to glory

Viktor Hovland has worked hard to improve his short game and that will stand him in good stead at Austin Country Club where clutch up-and-downs will be crucial.

The Norwegian’s form is handsome anyway, with five top-20s in six starts since signing off 2022 by winning the Hero World Challenge.

He was third in The Players at Sawgrass two weeks ago and has the class and the form to see off Chris Kirk, Si Woo Kim and Matt Kuchar to win his group.

Tip: Outright winner – Viktor Hovland @ 25/1 with bet365

Hatton has group pedigree

Tyrrell Hatton, like Hovland, enjoyed himself at Sawgrass, producing a dazzling 68-65 finish over the weekend to claim second behind Scheffler.

That’s four top-10s in six starts in 2023 for the Englishman who, as a three-time group winner at the Match Play, will be confident of getting to the last 16 and beyond.

Tip: Outright winner – Tyrrell Hatton @ 22/1 with bet365

Hickok can lead Texan charge

Kramer Hickok took a shine to Punta Cana last year, rounding off a decent week with a 66 on Sunday to tie for 13th. Four years earlier the Texan, who roomed with Jordan Spieth in their university days, came home in 10th.

Hickok had a weekend to forget at the Valspar after opening up 68-68 but clearly likes the Dominican Republic and, like all good Texans, won’t mind if the wind gets up.

Tip: Outright winner – Kramer Hickok @ 33/1 with bet365

Gribble’s form demands respect

Left-hander Cody Gribble, a team-mate of Hickok in their time together at University of Texas, flew out to the Dominican Republic in high spirits after back-to-back seventh-placed finishes in Puerto Rico and at Copperhead in the Valspar.

His iron play in Florida was rock-solid and at Punta Cana where finding fairways isn’t the challenge but finding the greens is, that could give him an edge.

Tip: Outright winner – Cody Gribble @ 60/1 with bet365

Lawrence not scared to double up

Home hope Thriston Lawrence has already won on the DP World Tour this year and has shown he can repeat the feat having won twice last season.

The South African seems to save his best form for events in his country and after finishing 14th at last week’s SDC Championship he will be bullish going back to Steyn City where he was eighth last year.

Tip: Outright winner – Thriston Lawrence @ 28/1 with bet365

Case can be made for Jarvis

Another South African, Casey Jarvis, gave himself too much to do at St Francis Links in last week’s SDC after opening with a 73, although he bounced back with three sub-par rounds.

One of the rising stars of the DP World Tour, he has the power to dominate a long track and if his putter is hot he becomes a massive danger.

Tip: Outright winner – Casey Jarvis @ 40/1 with bet365
