NFL Coach of the Year predictions: Who will win?

Betting on the future Coach of the Year winner largely hinges on two factors: the coach’s ability to make the most of their roster and the team’s talent level. With this in mind, we believe coach Doug Pederson of the Jacksonville Jaguars (+2000 at FanDuel) has the best chance of returning value.

After serving as an assistant coach to Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City, Pederson returned as Philadelphia’s head coach in 2016. Despite being longshots to win the Super Bowl in 2017, Pederson led the Eagles to a title in 2017 before being dismissed before the 2020 season.

After spending some time in retirement, Pederson signed on to coach the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022; despite Jacksonville placing fourth in the AFC South for four consecutive seasons from 2018-2022, Pederson led the Jaguars to an AFC South title and a Wild Card Round win in his first season as head coach.

In Pederson’s second year with Jacksonville, look for him to replicate the success he enjoyed with Philadelphia (where he won the Super Bowl in his second season). With a division title under his belt, Pederson will be shooting for much more; considering Jacksonville’s recent lack of success, even a moderate playoff run would immediately place Pederson at the head of the pack for Coach of the Year honors.

Pederson has a lot going his way in the personnel department as well. His offense is loaded with dynamic playmakers, headlined by Heiman-winning QB Trevor Lawrence; his Clemson teammate, RB Travis Etienne Jr.; and four talented pass-catchers in Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, and Evan Engram.

On the defensive side of the ball, Pederson will see the vast majority of last season’s talented defensive unit return – they allowed the fifth-fewest yards per game of any team. Moreover, the AFC South is wide open for the taking. With Houston, Indianapolis, and Tennessee all struggling last season, the Jaguars could run away with their division and see a deep playoff run, possibly culminating in a Super Bowl appearance if things break their way.

With his Coach of the Year odds set at (+2000) on FanDuel, Pederson seems primed to capitalize on his talented roster and extensive experience, cashing for bettors who back him early.

Bet on Dan Campbell to win NFL Coach of the Year (+1100 at FanDuel)

While we think Pederson has the most valuable line on FanDuel Sportsbook, oddsmakers believe a different coach will take home the award: Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions. Taking over the Lions in 2021, things have surely been different for Lions fans in the past two years. While they haven’t managed any sustained success, they fought their way out of the league’s basement, largely as a result of Campbell’s leadership.

Like Pederson, Campbell has built up his roster into one that – on paper – looks like it can be a contender. Though there are some questions at quarterback (particularly long-term, which is expected to be addressed during the upcoming NFL first-year player draft), the Lions feature one of the most impressive collections of skill players in the league, headlined by versatile ball carrier D’Andre Swift and the recently-acquired David Montgomery.

Their pass-catchers are no slouches either, with breakout star Amon-Ra St. Brown and the promising second-year receiver Jameson Williams headlining the receiver group. Unlike Pederson, who had success last season with the Jaguars, it wouldn’t take a deep run for Campbell to find himself in the running for NFL Coach of the Year honors.

A winning season and playoff appearance would be more than enough for Campbell to be heavily considered, particularly with the timing of the Lions’ turnaround coinciding with Campbell’s arrival. FanDuel oddsmakers believe these factors make Dan Campbell (+1100 at FanDuel) the favorite to win the award, as reflected by his NFL Coach of the Year odds.
