Teams out of UEFA Champions League 2022/2023: PSG, Liverpool among latest clubs eliminated in Round of 16

Must read

The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League campaign is approaching its pointy end with only eight teams remaining in the competition.

Meanwhile, a total of 78 clubs have had their trophy dreams dashed with 46 eliminated in the qualifying stages, 16 in the group stage, and another eight in the Round of 16.

The likes of Barcelona and Juventus failed to even make it out of their groups this season, highlighting just how competitive the Champions League continues to be. English clubs Liverpool and Tottenham have fallen by the wayside, as well as star-studded French champions PSG.

With the Round of 16 in the books, The Sporting News has the updated list of clubs that have been eliminated from the 2022/23 competition.

Teams out of Champions League after Round of 16

There were three German Bundesliga clubs that fell at the first knockout round hurdle in 2023, leaving only Bayern to contend for the trophy from that nation.

Three Italian sides are still alive in the quarter finals, with current Serie A leaders Napoli romping past Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 in the Round of 16, while the two Milan clubs advanced by the minimum scoreline.

Unlike some of the clubs that failed to escape their group in the Champions League — with eight of them getting a crack at the Europa League — none of the following eight teams will get a second chance, and it’s a case of waiting till next season (that is, if they manage to qualify for Europe via their domestic competitions).

Teams eliminated in Champions League group stage 2022/23

There were 16 clubs that failed to progress from the group stage to the Champions League knockouts.

Spain’s Barcelona and Italy’s Juventus were two giants that surprisingly fell short of reaching the knockouts. Meanwhile, Rangers and Viktoria Plzen both finished group play without picking up a single point.

While teams that finished in fourth place saw their continental trophy dreams shattered, teams that came in third in their group were given a European lifeline through the second-tier Europa League knockout playoffs.
